Tamil Nadu Approves 24×7 Operations for Shops and Establishments: In a significant policy shift to energize the state’s business climate, the Tamil Nadu government has granted permission for all shops and commercial establishments to operate 24×7, every day of the year. This progressive decision is part of the state’s push to modernize retail regulations and support a thriving night-time economy, especially in urban and metropolitan areas.
Permission Valid for Three Years from June 2025
The government’s order allows businesses to function continuously for a period of three years, beginning June 5, 2025. The extended validity offers predictability for sectors like retail, hospitality, and IT services, enabling them to plan long-term and cater to consumer demands beyond traditional working hours.
Legal Amendments Ensure Regulatory Clarity
To facilitate this transition, the government has amended the Tamil Nadu Shops and Establishments Act, 1947, removing legal barriers related to working hours. The revision ensures that businesses can function without breaching labour laws, while also emphasizing rest periods, employee safety, and well-being.
Special Exemptions for Larger Establishments
The new rule specifically exempts establishments with 10 or more employees from select regulatory provisions under the Act. However, these businesses are still required to comply with guidelines on hygiene, safety, employee welfare, and record-keeping. The exemption strikes a balance between operational freedom and worker protection.
