RBI strengthens presence in Andhra Pradesh
RBI Office Shifts to Vijayawada to Strengthen Regional Reach: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has made a strategic move by relocating its Andhra Pradesh regional office to Vijayawada. The new premises, located on MG Road in Governorpet, were officially inaugurated on June 16, 2025, by Deputy Governor T. Rabi Sankar. This relocation signals the central bank’s intent to improve access and oversight in one of India’s fast-growing states.
Why Vijayawada matters?
Vijayawada is not just a central location in Andhra Pradesh but also a major commercial hub. The city’s accessibility, along with its administrative infrastructure, makes it ideal for hosting a key institution like the RBI. This decision also aligns with the state’s development trajectory and the increasing volume of financial activities across the region.
Departments operating from the new office
The newly established office will house multiple important departments. These include:
- Integrated Banking Department (IBD), which deals with core banking functions
- Financial Inclusion and Development Department (FIDD), promoting banking access to rural and underserved regions
- Foreign Exchange Department (FED), ensuring smooth forex transactions
- Department of Supervision (DoS), critical for monitoring banks and financial entities
Other departments such as Human Resource Management (HRMD), Information Technology Cell (DIT), Audit Budget and Control Cell (ABCC), and the Rajbhasha Cell will also operate from this facility. These ensure the smooth internal functioning and compliance with official language policies.
Currency operations remain in Hyderabad
Interestingly, despite the shift of the regional office, currency management will continue from Hyderabad. This division of functions reflects RBI’s practical approach—allowing administrative decentralization while maintaining specialized hubs for critical operations.
A nod to administrative efficiency
This shift is not just geographical. It’s also symbolic of administrative modernization. With leadership under Regional Director Attah Omar Basheer, the Vijayawada office is expected to play a vital role in the RBI’s outreach, especially in financial inclusion and local supervision.
A quick Static GK check
The RBI was established in 1935 under the Reserve Bank of India Act, and it is headquartered in Mumbai. While it governs India’s monetary policy, it also operates regional offices across states to implement policies locally. With this move, Vijayawada joins other key cities hosting regional RBI offices like Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Jaipur.
