A rare blend of science and storytelling
Renowned ISRO Scientist and Tamil Author Nellai Su. Muthu Passes Away: Nellai Su. Muthu, a name familiar in both space science and Tamil literature, passed away on June 16, 2025, in Thiruvananthapuram, leaving behind a rich legacy of innovation and inspiration. At 74, he was not just a retired ISRO scientist, but also a powerful voice in Tamil writing, especially known for simplifying complex scientific concepts for young minds.
He had the rare ability to connect the stars and satellites with poems and stories. He was born on May 10, 1951, in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, a region that has produced many thinkers and artists.
His journey at ISRO
Muthu’s scientific journey was shaped at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, one of the most crucial launch centres in India. Here, he worked closely with none other than Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, contributing to some of India’s early strides in space research. His work helped lay the foundation for India’s growing ambitions in space.
This background added credibility to his writings on science, giving them both technical accuracy and emotional appeal.
Author of over 170 books
Muthu’s literary contributions are nothing short of phenomenal. He wrote more than 170 books, including over 100 on science, many of which are used in schools or libraries even today. His topics spanned from astronomy and physics to poetry and translation.
Some of his most celebrated works include:
- Vinveli 2057 (Sky 2057) – awarded Best Book in Mathematics, Astronomy, Physics, Chemistry (2000)
- Arivuttum Vigyaana Vilaiyaatu – a science tricks book for children, won Best Children’s Book (2004)
- Einsteinum Andaveliyum – blending Einstein’s life with the mystery of space, won Best Book in Biography (2005)
Muthu’s passion for Tamil culture
Muthu didn’t just stop at science. He wove Tamil history, culture, and mythology into his writings. One such example is Sevvayil Ulvetkkaiyum Nal Vaaippum, which links Greek myths with the planet Mars, showing his flair for cultural storytelling.
He was a regular columnist in Dinamani, a major Tamil daily, where he reached thousands of readers with his simple yet deep articles.
Recognitions and awards
His work earned him prestigious honors like the Kavimamani Award from the World Tamil Poets Association, Malaysia, and several awards from the Tamil Development Department, Government of Tamil Nadu. These reflect how well he was respected both in India and abroad.
A legacy that continues
Even after retiring from ISRO, Muthu continued writing in Madurai and later in Thiruvananthapuram. His later works focused more on motivating students, especially in rural areas, to explore science in their mother tongue. His life proves how science and culture can go hand in hand.
