What EnviStats India 2025 is about?
EnviStats India 2025: On World Environment Day 2025, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) unveiled the 8th edition of EnviStats India. This annual report serves as a snapshot of India’s environmental performance, offering updated data on topics like climate, biodiversity, energy, and fisheries.
Launched during a national workshop in New Delhi, the report brings together statistics from different ministries. It follows the UN’s Framework for the Development of Environment Statistics (FDES) 2013, ensuring international standards in environmental reporting.
Key environmental trends
The report tracks various long-term changes in India’s environmental landscape. One notable trend is the steady rise in temperatures over the years. For instance, the average annual temperature in India increased from 25.05°C in 2001 to 25.74°C in 2024. Both minimum and maximum temperatures have shown a similar rise.
When it comes to rainfall, there’s no long-term trend, but year-to-year variation is influenced heavily by monsoons. That’s not surprising, considering how much India depends on seasonal rainfall.
Rise of renewable energy
One of the most encouraging findings is the growth of renewable energy. From just 65,520 GWh in 2013–14, it soared to 2,25,835 GWh in 2023–24. At the same time, thermal power generation also rose significantly, reflecting India’s growing energy needs.
This shift toward cleaner sources is a good sign, showing India’s attempt to balance energy demand with environmental responsibility.
Boost in fish production
The fisheries sector has also seen massive improvement. Inland fish production more than doubled in a decade—from 61.36 lakh tonnes in 2013–14 to 139.07 lakh tonnes in 2023–24. Marine production grew too, though at a slower pace, rising from 34.43 to 44.95 lakh tonnes.
This kind of growth supports both food security and livelihoods, especially in coastal and rural communities.
Biodiversity in focus
India’s biodiversity remains one of the richest in the world. The country is home to 1,04,561 faunal species, which include 20,613 marine, 9,436 freshwater, and 22,404 soil species. This includes unique ecosystems like mangroves and estuaries, which are crucial for ecological balance.
These statistics place India among the top 10 megadiverse countries globally—a fact often highlighted in static GK questions.
Structural updates in EnviStats
This year’s edition also saw structural improvements. An expert group worked to expand data sources and align information with the FDES 2013 framework. For the first time, the report includes indicators like access to sanitation, Ramsar sites, and transport data.
Such enhancements make the publication more useful for policy-making, research, and transparency.
Spending on environment
In terms of financial commitment, the Environment Sustainability Sector had the highest expenditure at Rs. 2,433.24 crore in 2021–22. Meanwhile, sectors like Agro-forestry received less support. However, the spending on natural resource conservation saw an upward trend.
This shows a shift in focus toward long-term sustainability goals.
