India joins the global elite
Top Startup Cities 2025 in the Global Race: The startup landscape in 2025 has taken an interesting turn. While growth has slowed globally to under 21%, India’s Bangalore has carved its place among the world’s top ten startup cities. This is a big moment—not just for Bangalore, but also for India’s growing presence in the global innovation space. Joining cities like San Francisco, New York, and London, Bangalore now stands shoulder to shoulder with the best.
Interestingly, this comes even as India’s overall ranking slipped to 22nd place. Yet, it remains one of only three countries—alongside the US and China—to have three cities in the global top 20.
Global leaders stay ahead
San Francisco still leads the global pack with the highest ecosystem score. It’s followed by New York and London, both of which have seen impressive growth. London, in particular, grew at nearly 30%, making it Europe’s startup capital.
The Asia-Pacific region has shown the fastest overall growth. Cities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Tel Aviv are climbing rapidly. Shanghai’s 38.4% growth is a strong signal that Asia is not just catching up—it’s leaping ahead.
Bengaluru breaks into the top 10
India’s Bangalore, long known as the Silicon Valley of India, has officially entered the global top 10, ranking tenth with a growth rate of 13.8%. While it recorded the lowest growth among the top ten, Bangalore’s mature ecosystem, tech talent pool, and strong startup density helped it stay competitive. The city is a magnet for entrepreneurs, coders, and tech enthusiasts from across the country.
Delhi and Mumbai shine
Right after Bangalore comes New Delhi, ranked eleventh globally. With a 15.5% growth rate, the capital is becoming a startup hub thanks to government schemes, tech accelerators, and better infrastructure.
Mumbai follows at eighteenth, but what makes it stand out is its growth rate—31.5%, the highest among Indian cities. Investments in fintech, media tech, and consumer-focused startups are turning Mumbai into a rising star.
Beyond metros growth is spreading
Cities like Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, and Kolkata are part of a second wave of growth. Among them, Kolkata deserves special mention. Despite ranking low overall, it recorded a stunning growth rate of 45.7%—the fastest among all Indian cities. This shows the potential brewing outside the usual metros.
To sustain this momentum, India needs to:
- Strengthen digital connectivity in tier 2 and tier 3 cities
- Attract more venture capital to emerging hubs
- Support sector-specific innovations in areas like AI, health tech, and climate solutions
