Remembering the fight for identity
Telangana Formation Day 2025: Every year on June 2nd, the people of Telangana come together to celebrate more than just the creation of a state. It’s a reminder of resilience, cultural identity, and a long democratic struggle. Telangana Formation Day 2025 marks the 11th anniversary of the formation of India’s 29th state.
Behind the joy and colours lies a tough journey. Telangana wasn’t simply gifted; it was won after years of protest, hunger strikes, and emotional sacrifices. From students to political leaders, many joined hands to raise their voice for a separate identity.
Journey from Nizam to New State
Once a part of the Hyderabad State ruled by the Nizams, Telangana had its own distinct character. Things changed in 1956, when it was merged with Andhra to form a single state under the States Reorganisation Act. While both spoke Telugu, their development needs were very different.
People in Telangana felt ignored—less jobs, fewer educational opportunities, and unequal access to water. This gave birth to frustration and later, movements.
Key events that shaped the movement
- 1969: The Jai Telangana Movement began. People took to the streets demanding separation.
- 1972: The Jai Andhra Movement showed that both regions were unhappy with the merger.
- 2001: K. Chandrasekhar Rao launched the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS).
- 2009: KCR’s hunger strike drew massive support, and the youth joined emotionally.
- 2014: The central government passed the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, officially creating Telangana.
This wasn’t just a political win—it was the voice of people finally being heard.
Celebrations in 2025
This year, the main event is at the Parade Grounds in Secunderabad, with Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy leading the celebrations. He begins by paying tribute at Gun Park, a site honouring those who gave their lives for the cause.
Culture and colour across districts
All 33 districts will take part. From the streets of Hyderabad to villages in Khammam, the vibe will be festive. Cultural events will be rich in local flavours:
- Perini Shivathandavam in Warangal
- Bathukamma-themed dances
- Oggu Katha storytelling in villages
Honouring the builders of Telangana
Talented people from education, farming, arts, and public service will be honoured for shaping the new Telangana. This brings both recognition and motivation for future efforts.
Celebrating culture and vision
Telangana is known for its Deccan-style architecture, Pochampally sarees, and a unique Telugu dialect. Formation Day is a great moment to showcase these.
It’s also a moment to remember the sacrifices of youth and students—those who went on hunger strikes or even gave their lives during the intense 2009–2010 phase.
A look at Telangana today
Telangana is more than a political success story. It has shown how democratic means and people’s unity can lead to big change.
