India Overtakes Sri Lanka in Tea Export Performance
India Climbs to Second Spot in Global Tea Export Rankings in 2024: India has achieved a new milestone by becoming the second-largest tea exporter globally in 2024, surpassing Sri Lanka, as per the latest figures from the Tea Board of India. This marks India’s strongest tea export achievement since the record 256 million kilograms reached in 2018. This achievement ranks just below India’s peak export figure of 256 million kilograms recorded in 2018. Kenya continues to lead the global market, exporting more than 500 Mkg.
Economic Impact on Indian Tea Sector
This increase in tea exports has brought in ₹7,112 crore in foreign exchange earnings for the Indian economy. For years, tea exports hovered between 200–225 Mkg, but this recent growth is a major boost for small tea growers and plantation workers, especially in key producing states like Assam, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu. With the momentum now in India’s favor, the goal of reaching 300 Mkg by 2030 appears within reach.
Government Support Fuels Orthodox Tea Surge
The sharp rise in export volume is largely credited to the government’s emphasis on orthodox tea, a high-quality traditional variety. Through various incentives and export facilitation programs, Indian producers were able to meet increased demand from Russia, Europe, and West Asia. The Tea Association of India highlighted that these measures helped India gain a competitive edge in high-value international markets.
Looking Ahead: Enhancing India’s Tea Footprint
India’s total tea production stands at around 1,400 Mkg annually, most of which is consumed within the country. However, with global exports now gaining momentum, industry leaders and policymakers are focusing on improving export quality, exploring new global markets, and enhancing branding efforts. If these trends continue, India could eventually rival Kenya at the top of the world’s tea export charts.
