India Ranks 36 in Network Readiness Index 2025 : India has climbed to the 36th rank globally in the Readiness for Frontier Technologies Index 2025, showing remarkable progress from its 48th position in 2022. This jump is no small feat—it reflects India’s growing capabilities in fields like artificial intelligence and nanotechnology. Released by UNCTAD in its latest Technology and Innovation Report, the index evaluates how well countries are prepared to adopt advanced technologies.
What Helped India Rise?
Several factors pushed India upward in this global ranking. Despite challenges in ICT infrastructure, where it stands at 99th, and skills development, ranked 113th, India shines in research and development—securing the 3rd spot globally. That’s a strong indicator of the country’s investment in innovation and scientific talent. With a 10th rank in industrial capacity, India also demonstrates robust manufacturing strength. Finance access ranks 70th, showing progress but also the need for more inclusive credit systems.
AI and Developers: A Growing Strength
One of India’s biggest strengths is in artificial intelligence. It now holds the second spot globally for GitHub developers, with 13 million contributors. India is also a major hub for Generative AI projects, showing potential to lead the AI revolution. In 2023 alone, India attracted $1.4 billion in private AI investment, placing it 10th globally, just behind China and the United States. This momentum shows India is not just adopting tech but actively shaping it.
Skill Gaps Still Exist
While India’s achievements are impressive, the skills gap remains a concern. Ranked 113th in human capital, the country needs more skilled workers to fully utilize its growing tech infrastructure. However, the report also notes progress, thanks to efforts in increasing schooling years and expanding high-skill jobs. Countries like Bhutan, Moldova, and Morocco are on similar journeys—improving skills alongside economic growth.
Preparing for a Digital Future
India’s digital future is being shaped by policies like the India AI Mission, which promotes AI education and startups across the country, especially in tier-2 and tier-3 cities. This makes high-end technology more inclusive and accessible. As AI changes how businesses work, India is already thinking ahead—investing in reskilling programs to prepare workers for the new tech landscape.
