India gets a UPI-powered bank branch
Slice Opens India’s First UPI-Based Bank Branch in Bengaluru: Slice, a rising name in India’s fintech space, has launched the country’s first-ever bank branch driven entirely by UPI. Located in Koramangala, Bengaluru, this branch blends cutting-edge technology with traditional banking to create a next-generation, cashless experience.
This development marks slice’s entry into the physical banking space, expanding from its earlier digital-only identity.
Unique offerings by slice
The main attraction is the newly introduced slice UPI credit card. It allows users to scan and pay via UPI, functioning like a credit card without the need for PoS terminals.
- No joining or annual maintenance charges
- Earn up to 3% cashback on eligible transactions
- Option to split purchases into three zero-interest EMIs using the “slice in 3” feature
Additionally, a UPI-enabled ATM is part of the branch, which supports both cash deposits and withdrawals via UPI – a first in the Indian banking system.
A self-reliant digital model
While many fintech firms depend on partner banks for their backend operations, slice has built its own full-stack banking infrastructure. This includes everything from core banking systems to credit underwriting and customer onboarding.
The branch operates with a tech-first approach, offering automated kiosks for self-service and instant onboarding. Every interaction, from fund transfers to credit usage, is integrated through UPI.
Expanding credit accessibility
Slice aims to extend formal credit services to the underserved population, especially those who have never used a credit card. This innovation focuses on bringing credit directly to consumers in a convenient, real-time format.
Static GK fact: UPI is a real-time payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and launched in 2016 to simplify interbank transactions.
This physical branch launch is part of slice’s larger plan to combine the strengths of digital banking with a brick-and-mortar presence.
Remarks from leadership
Satish Kumar Kalra, the Managing Director and CEO of slice, emphasized that this move represents a transformational shift in the way Indians will engage with banking. He referred to credit through UPI as a crucial innovation that can greatly boost financial inclusion.
Static GK tip: Bengaluru, often called the tech capital of India, is a major hub for fintech innovations and startups, making it a strategic location for slice’s first branch.
